Woolton
Village Residents Association
(Friends of Woolton Wood
& Camp Hill)
The WVRA, whose motto is Without fear
or favour, was formed in 1981 are British Trust for Conservation
volunteers and have, during the last three years, planted over two
thousand oak, beech, and other species of tree and shrub in our local
woods in order to save the mature woodlands. They have sown and planted
bluebells and sown over 10 million wildflower seeds, including a swathe of
wild flower seeds along by the Woolton Wood railings on High Street, in
order to provide a substantial insect food source to save and support many
species of wild bird – including kestrels, owls, swallows, woodpeckers,
thrush, blackbird, chaffinch and rook etc. Almost forty bird and bat
boxes, funded by the Woolton Recreational and Educational Trust, built by
local children and supported by the WVRA, were installed in the woodland
to encourage more wild birds to nest.
Working in partnership with the City
Council, Association volunteers have succeeded in regenerating much of the
natural woodland, increasing the resident insect, wild bird, and mammal
population. The project gained Green Flag award in 2003 in
recognition of the formal features and in particular, the natural
environments which had been sustained and improved...
